5 scary things you need to know when you skip meals

Updated: May 17, 2022

Look, we know you’re a very busy person. And being busy sometimes comes with the fact that you’re skipping or moving your meal schedule to a later time. But did you know that skipping your meal has more severe consequences on your health, work, and daily health?

So if you are always holding back your mealtime to finish whatever you’re doing, here are 5 reasons why you’re putting yourself at risk.

1. You will overeat later in the day

When you finally do sit down to eat, you’re so famished that you end up overeating. Not only will this cause you to consume more calories than you would have if you had just eaten a regular meal, but it can also lead to indigestion and other digestive problems.

So, if you’re looking to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, it’s important to be mindful of how much you’re eating. Try not to let yourself get too hungry, and make sure to eat regular meals. This will help you avoid overeating and gaining unwanted weight.

2. Leads to Unhealthy Eating Habits

When you're hungry, your body craves nutrients and energy, which will lead you to reach for the closest available source of food. More often than not this would be either a fast-food chain that serves high-fat meals or your stash of junk food.

Consumption of excessive food high in fats, sugar, and calories may lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Excessively eating high fat and high sugar food is also linked to poor mental health.

So next time you’re tempted to reach for that bag of chips or slice of cake, remember that it’s not just your waistline that will suffer—it’s your overall health.

Choose a healthier and more balanced option instead- you’ll feel better both physically and mentally.

3. Headache or dizziness

Skipping your meal will cause you dizziness and headache. When this happens, your body isn’t getting the energy it needs to function properly. Not eating can cause massive headaches. Your body needs food for fuel, and when it doesn’t get it, you may end up with a headache. If you’re skipping meals or not eating enough, be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration can also cause dizziness and headaches.

To avoid these problems, make sure you’re eating regular meals and snacks throughout the day. And if you do feel lightheaded or have a headache, drink some water and eat something right away.

4. Your metabolism slows down

When you don’t eat regularly, your body goes into “starvation mode” and starts to hold on to calories and fat because it thinks it may not get food again soon. This can lead to weight gain in the long term, even if you’re eating fewer calories overall. Metabolism is essential for burning calories and losing weight, but it also has an impact on how we feel overall. When metabolism is low, we tend to feel tired and sluggish.

In short, skipping meals is not a good way to lose weight or boost your metabolism – in fact, it can do the opposite! If you’re looking to jumpstart your metabolism, make sure you’re eating regular meals and snacks throughout the day.

5. You become irritable and have trouble concentrating

Skipping meals can affect your mood swings. When you are starving, your blood sugar levels drop, and you may feel irritable, anxious, or depressed. You may also have trouble concentrating and be more forgetful. If you are trying to lose weight, you may find that skipping meals makes you crave sweets and high-carbohydrate foods.

Eating regular meals helps to stabilize your blood sugar levels and mood swings. When you skip meals, your body is forced to break down muscle tissue for energy. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day will help keep your energy levels up and prevent mood swings.

If you are having trouble eating regular meals due to a busy schedule, there are some simple solutions. Planning ahead by preparing your meals in advance so you don’t have to spend lots of time going to the grocery, preparing the ingredients, and cooking.
